Congratulations to our medalists from the 2017 Vango Winter Open tournament in Toronto on February 4th-5th. It was a busy weekend with many club members competing. First up were the women’s epeeists with Andrea finishing 2nd, Karen 8th, Lauren 17th and Noura 26th after poules. Lauren lost a heartbreaking bout 15-14 in the elimination round, and Noura won an amazing bout against the 7th seed. Karen fenced very well and sailed to the round of 8, where she fenced the Canadian National team member. Karen was able to keep the score close until the very end. Andrea reached the round of 8 where she had a close bout against a fellow hungarian fencer and won by 1 point. In the semi final round she lost to our two time Olympian thus finishing with a bronze medal.
Next up where the men’s epeeists; Noah, Nathaniel, Chris and Bowen. Chris fenced our men’s epee Olympian in the poules and was very excited to have this opportunity. Chris scored a beautiful point against him! In the elimination round Chris and Nathaniel won their first elimination round with Chris then having to face one of the top seeds in his next round. Nathaniel made it into the round of 32 where he was up against the first seed.
Rowan had an exciting day as well, not only did he cheer us on and watch some amazing fencing, he was also able to meet and get a picture taken with Maxime and Donna, our Olympians!
The team tournament was on Sunday, and our Great London Fire composed of Lauren, Noura and Catherine competed. In the poules they beat University of Toronto and lost to University of Michigan. In the elimination round they beat Trent, and faced University of Michigan again the semi finals. This time they won 45-35! What a great bout! In the finals they were up against the team from Vango and kept it very close with a final score of 43-45, thus finishing with a very nice silver medal! Congratulations team!
