Newmarket Winterfun

Two fencers from the club competed at the Newmarket Winterfun on March 9th, Chris Espanol and Eamon Drysdale.

Chris stole the show with his gold medal performance!

Chris started off his day with three wins and two losses (both by a point) in the poules, earning him the 3rd rank, behind Ballard and Brydon. He easily defeted his first opponent in the DEs 10-5, then also beat Brydon by a good margin. These victories took Chris to the finals, where he faced Ballard – a lefty with killer parries and good tactics. Chris fenced a very smart bout, keeping good distance, as small as possible actions and scored several points on counter attack fleche – followed by prieme on the parry. This exciting match was all tied up at 5-5 at the break, but Chris\’s confidence level was at a high and he kept his cool and smart fencing, pulling forward to 9-7. The last hit was a well executed indirect attack to the knee, which secured him the gold medal. Chris was very happy with his performance!
