Four fencers competed in the York Open tournament on April 9-10, with two coming home with a bronze and gold medal respectively!
Catherine Fowler ranked second in the Junior Women’s Epee poules despite having a faulty blade to start, earning herself a bye and placing her directly in the semi-finals. The score stayed close throughout the bout, and after a passivity call at 14-13 in the third period,Catherine used a skilful wrist hit and well-timed fleche to defeat her opponent. This brought her into the finals, where she won 15-9 and earned a gold medal!
Nathaniel Stokan represented the Junior Men’s division. He came out of his
poules 3-3 and continued on to win 15-12, moving into the semi-finals and winning a bronze medal!
Chris Wick fenced in the Senior Men’s Epee, where he finished his poules in fourteenth and easily won his first DE 15-4.
Latisha Laing, despite having lost her contacts earlier, fenced in the Senior Women’s Epee and had some good poule bouts.
Well done to all fencers, and congratulations to Catherine and Nathaniel for your medals!
